Roberto had a two-wire over current issue in his field wiring, here's Dan's response.

Here's the step by step process: Overcurrent Troubleshooting

My controller has the message two-wire over current message: What does that mean and how do I fix it?

    Troubleshooting

    • You’ll need a milliamp clamp meter, that can measure down to .001 amps (1 milliamp).
      • Ex: Armada Pro95 or NK Precision (found at your Baseline distributor or electrical supply store).
    • Well-known good solenoid, which helps verify that the controller and its transformer are functioning properly.
      1. Once the solenoid is spliced in, use the clamp meter to begin testing the wire path.
      2. Clamp around one side of the wire path and move down the wire path toward the field. The clamp meter is non-invasive (no need to break any splices).
        1. Start by getting a benchmark or baseline reading from an amperage drawing.
        2. Track the high current reading by checking each splice along the wire path. If the number drops suddenly, you’ve gone too far—back up one splice. The high reading will lead you to a bad splice, wire section, or faulty device. Once found, break the splice and replace the bad part.

What’s an Overcurrent? An overcurrent is when there is excessive draw of electrical energy across the two-wire path.

    • Ex: if the red and black wire on the 2-wire path are shorted and touching, or if there’s a nick in the wire allowing water conduct electricity between them, it can cause higher-than-normal amperage draw, triggering controller to set off this alert.

What happens now that there’s a two-wire overcurrent message on the controller?

    • You can’t irrigate any of your zones until this message is cleared.
    • The overcurrent has the potential to damage the controller, which may cause it to shut down, stop all irrigation, and isolate the problem.
      • This happens because the field wiring has the potential to damage the controller, or you prevent irrigation.
