Introduction
To enhance LTE signal strength, the UltraSonix antenna can be relocated outside the utility vault or meter box by installing a plastic irrigation valve box. The antenna should be positioned upright, facing the sky, for optimal reception. In most cases, the antenna cable is extended back into the vault where the UltraSonix device is housed.
Alternatively, the UltraSonix flow monitor itself can be installed inside the plastic valve box, alongside the antenna, while the sensor cable is routed back into the utility vault to connect to the water meter. This configuration may be beneficial in areas with very poor vault signal conditions.
Materials and Tools Required
- 8" round plastic irrigation valve box
- 10-foot LTE antenna extension cable
- Shovel
- Hammer drill with 4" - 12" concrete drill bit (or equivalent)
Antenna Extension Installation
Step 1: Choose Valve Box Location
- Identify a suitable location outside the meter box or utility vault to install the plastic valve box.
- The ideal position is in line with the water supply line entering or exiting the vault.
- Ensure the box can site flush with the ground surface to avoid creating a tripping hazard or interference with landscaping equipment.

Step 2: Drill Access Hole
- From inside the vault, drill a hole outward using a concrete drill bit and hammer drill.
- The hole should be sized appropriately based on your configuration:
- For antenna extension: Large enough for the SMA antenna connector.
- For sensor cable routing: Sized for the sensor cable's connector.

Step 3: Install the Plastic Valve Box
- Dig a hole and install the 8" round valve box in the selected location.
- Make sure the valve box and it's lid are level with surrounding grade.

Step 4: Extend the Antenna or Gateway
-
Option A: Antenna Only
- Mount the LTE antenna on an L-bracket inside the valve box.
- Ensure it is upright and facing the sky.
-
Option B: Antenna + Gateway
- Install the UltraSonix device with the antenna inside the valve box.
- Maintain an upright orientation for the antenna.
Note: Ensure all cables are properly secure and protected against water intrusion.

Step 5: Run Cable Back to Vault
-
Option A: Antenna Extension
- Feed the antenna cable or extension from the valve box through the drilled hole and into the vault.
- Connect the antenna cable or extension to the UltraSonix device.
-
Option B: Sensor Cable Routing
- Feed the sensor cable from the vault through the drilled hole and into the plastic valve box.
- Connect the sensor cable to the FM250 gateway w/ barrel connector spice kit.

Step 6: Connect the UltraSonix Device
- If installed inside the vault, connect the antenna cable to the UltraSonix device.
- If installed inside the valve box, ensure the device is connected to both the antenna and the sensor cable.
- Press the Play button on the device to initiate LTE cellular communication.

Step 7: Verify Signal Strength
Open the Installer App and verify communication:
- Confirm communication Passed.
- Confirm pulses detected (last min) is Yes.
- Confirm LTE signal strength is Medium or better for optimal performance.
