    Programming for Drought Compliance

How to adjust irrigation programs to meet restrictions and reduce water use with WeatherTRAK Central

    PDF

    Accessing the Program Settings

    1. Log in to WeatherTRAK Central and select the controller you want to configure.

    2. Navigate to the Program page.

    3. Go to the Days and Times section and click the plus icon to reveal the settings available for the controller.

WeatherTRAK controllers can have up to four separate programs, each with its own start time, water window, and water day mode. However, it is common to see all stations programmed under Program A

The examples that follow focus on making changes to Program A.

    Configuring Water Window 1

Water Window 1 controls when watering is scheduled to begin and how long irrigation is allowed to occur.

    1. Locate the Water Window 1 column.

    2. Set the Start Time to specify when watering will begin. Most local watering restrictions only allow irrigation during late evening and early morning hours. For example, set the start time to 9:00 PM.

    3. Set the Duration to define the total amount of time irrigation is allowed to occur. For example, setting a duration of 12 hours creates a water window from 9:00 PM to 9:00 AM.

The Time column will reflect the start time, duration, and calculated end time based on your entries.

    Understanding Water Window 2

Water Window 2 has two different behaviors depending on how your WeatherTRAK controller is configured.

    Auto Mode:
The controller responds to high ET (evapotranspiration) or extreme weather conditions and applies an additional amount of water to compensate.

    User Mode:
Water Window 2 acts as a second start time and behaves exactly as Water Window 1 does. If you set a second start time in User Mode, the controller will run Program A completely through a second time, just as it did with the first start time.

In most situations where you need to comply with local watering restrictions, the second water window will not be needed and can be turned off.

    Selecting a Water Day Mode

Water day modes enable you to dictate exactly which days irrigation will occur.

WeatherTRAK ET Pro series controllers offer six different modes:

    • Optimized by WeatherTRAK
    • Odd-Even
    • Water Day Interval
    • Days of Week
    • Days of Week by Month
    • Off

⚠️The default mode is Optimized by WeatherTRAK. Each mode is explained in detail in the sections below.

    Using Optimized by WeatherTRAK Mode

Optimized by WeatherTRAK is the default water day mode. This setting enables the controller to decide which days it will or will not water based on weather conditions and ET data.

Even with this mode enabled, you can exclude one specific day of the week from watering:

    1. Under the Options drop-down, choose one day of the week where watering will be excluded.

    2. For example, select Tuesday if you have regularly scheduled maintenance on that day and want to ensure watering will not occur and interrupt that maintenance.

    Using Odd-Even Mode

Some local watering restrictions require that irrigation occur on either odd or even days of the week.

    1. Change the water day mode to Odd-Even.

    2. Under Options, choose either Odd or Even:

    • Odd: Waters on the first, third, and fifth days of the week
    • Even: Waters on the second, fourth, and sixth days of the week

    Using Water Day Interval Mode

Water Day Interval mode enables you to water on an interval-based schedule.

    1. Change the water day mode to Water Day Interval.

    2. Under the Options drop-down, choose an interval from 1 to 30 days:

    • 1: Waters every day
    • 2: Waters every other day
    • 3: Waters every third day
    • And so on, up to 30 days

For example, setting the interval to 3 means the controller will water every third day.

    Using Days of Week Mode

The Days of Week water day mode is by far the most commonly used for tailoring an irrigation schedule to fit local watering restrictions.

    1. Change the water day mode to Days of Week.

    2. A calendar icon will appear under Options. Click the icon to open the day selection interface.

    3. Select the days of the week when you want watering to occur by clicking the checkboxes. For example, select Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

    4. To make changes, simply click a checkbox to remove a checkmark or add one under the day you would like watering to occur.

    5. Once you are satisfied with your selection, press the Set button. The controller will now follow that schedule.

Using Days of Week by Month Mode

The Days of Week by Month water day mode is a more advanced version of Days of Week. This mode enables you to set the days of the week specific to each month of the year.

In addition to changes in seasons throughout the year, certain local watering restrictions also change depending on the month. This mode gives you the ability to make granular changes on a month-by-month basis.

    1. Change the water day mode to Days of Week by Month.

    2. Select or deselect the days you would like irrigation to occur for each individual month.

    3. Press the Set button to apply your changes.

    Using Off Mode

The Off water day mode suspends all watering on the associated program.

    1. Change the water day mode to Off.

🚨When a program is set to Off, no watering will occur until the mode is changed.
💡A helpful feature of WeatherTRAK Central is that if you open the Stations area, you will see that the program (in this case, Program A) is now displayed in red, indicating that it is off.

    Saving and Sending Your Changes

An important and sometimes overlooked step is saving your changes and sending them to your WeatherTRAK controller.

    1. Click the Save and Send button.

    2. Click OK to confirm.

Your program information is now being saved in WeatherTRAK Central and sent to your controller.

    Reviewing Your Changes

It is always a wise idea to review the changes you have made.

    1. Go to the Manage page by clicking the Manage tab.

    2. Review the overview of the currently selected controller, along with other valuable information displayed on this page.

Sending a Rain Pause to a Single Controller

In addition to changing your watering schedule, many restrictions require that irrigation systems do not water for a specific amount of time after a rain event. For example, after a rain event you may not be allowed to water for 48 hours. This can be accomplished by sending a rain pause directly from WeatherTRAK Central.

    1. On the Manage page, locate the Rain Pause feature on the left side of the screen.

    2. If needed, select a specific controller using the drop-down menu at the top of the page.

    3. Press Edit next to Rain Pause. A dialog box will appear.

    4. Next to User Rain Pause Days, use the drop-down menu to choose the number of days you would like watering to be delayed.

    For example:

    • Choose 1 day to suspend watering for one day
    • Choose 2 days to suspend watering for 48 hours

    5. Click the Update Rain Pause button.

The system will reach out to the controller and suspend all watering for the selected duration. If watering is occurring at the moment you send the rain pause, it will be suspended immediately, along with the specified time period thereafter.

    6. Once the dialog box is closed, the controller will update.

Sending a Rain Pause to Multiple Controllers

You can also send a rain pause to multiple controllers at once.

    1. Click the Controllers tab at the top of the page to reveal the controller list.

    2. Select the controllers you want to pause:

    • Put a checkmark in the box at the top to select all controllers
    • Or put a checkmark in the box next to specific controller names to select only those controllers

    3. Click the Rain Pause button on the right side of the screen.

    4. Use the drop-down menu to choose the duration in days for how long you would like the pause to last. For example, choose 2 days for a 48-hour suspension.

    5. Press the Send Rain Pause button.

Regardless of how many days you choose, the rain pause will suspend watering from the moment you click the button. All selected controllers are now suspended from watering for the specified duration (for example, 48 hours).
