    Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge Instructions

Learn how to use an ultrasonic thickness gauge effectively for accurate pipe measurements.

    Overview

The Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge (UTG) can be used to measure the wall thickness of specific pipe materials as an aid to determine unknown pipe types. By combining the thickness data with the known outer diameter of the pipe, users can gain assurance in accurately identifying the correct pipe material.

    Setup the Device

The menu offers a variety of materials for selection. For Hydropoint use cases, it is advisable to set the material to Copper for most pipe verifications.

    1. Press the Menu button.
    2. Ensure Measure is highlighted. Select OK.
    3. Sound Velocity should be highlighted. When it is, select OK.
    4. A list of material is presented. Scroll down to Copper and select OK.
    5. A sound speed will be shown. Select OK
    6. Measurements can now be made.

    Sonic Coupling Agent

A coupling agent is essential for accurate measurements. Various binding liquids can be employed, including Gel, Oil, or Water. For optimal outcomes, Hydropoint recommends the use of Ultrasonic Gel.

    Calibrate the Device

The UTG is equipped with a calibration pad situated at the base of the unit. It's essential to complete the calibration process before starting measurements.

    Here are the step-by-step instructions:

    1. Press the Menu button to power on the device.
    2. Press the ESC button.
    3. Press the Down button twice.
    4. Press OK.
    5. Apply an even coat of sonic coupling gel to the round probe end. Dow 111 is a commonly available option that works effectively.
    6. Position the round end of the probe on the metal disc calibration pad.
    7. On the screen, you'll see five empty circles. Once all five circles are filled in, the device will be calibrated and return to measurement mode.

    Take Measurements

Before taking measurements with the UTG, ensure that any dirt, rust, or patina is removed from the pipe. Clean the surface by removing dirt and using sandpaper to eliminate rust or corrosion.

Any dirt, rust, or patina must be removed from the pipe before using the UTG to take measurements. Clean off the dirt and use sand paper to remove rust or corrosion from the pipe.

    1. Place the probe's rounded end, coated with coupling grease, on the surface to be measured.
    2. Hold the probe steady.
    3. Record the reading displayed on the UTG screen.

Repeat these steps on three alternate sections of the pipe to ensure consistent measurements across the entire length.
