This Quick Start Guide provides a brief overview of the key steps required to install and activate your FM350 flow monitor. It is designed to help you get up and running quickly.
Step 1: Pipe Preparation
Prepare the pipe surface to ensure a clean, secure mounting area for the FM350. Proper preparation is critical for accurate flow readings and long-term sensor performance.
Step 1-1: Identify the Installation Location
Select a straight section of pipe with at least 10 pipe diameters of unobstructed flow upstream and 5 pipe diameters downstream. Avoid elbows, valves, or tees within this range.
Step 1-2: Clean and Prepare the Pipe Surface
Remove any dirt, rust, loose paint, or debris from the pipe surface where the FM350 will be mounted. The surface must be clean and dry for proper adhesion of the transducer pads.
Step 2: Hardware Installation
Mount the FM350 to the prepared pipe and power on the device. During this phase, you will attach the flow monitor, secure the device using the supplied zip ties, and confirm initial connection status using the LED lights.
Step 2-1: Verify Flow Orientation
Before mounting, confirm the correct flow orientation for your pipe configuration. The FM350 must be aligned with the direction of water flow. Incorrect orientation will produce inaccurate readings.
Step 2-2: Mount the FM350 to the Pipe
- Match the arrow with water direction.
- Center the FM350 onto the prepared pipe surface and secure it using the included mounting hardware. Ensure the transducer pads make full contact with the pipe.
- Tighten the zip ties firmly to prevent movement while avoiding over-tightening, which could deform the pipe or device housing.
Step 2-3: Attach the Antenna
Connect the LTE antenna to the FM350. Position the antenna for optimal signal reception.
- Mount the antenna as high as possible. Use template near lid for meter boxes.
- Attach the SMA connector and tighten firmly by hand. Use extension cable if needed.
Step 2-4: Power On and Verify Initial LED Status
Press the Play button to power on the FM350. Observe the LED indicators during startup. After the LTE connection is established, verify the status below.
After LTE connects:
- Wireless Icon = Solid Green (connected to cloud)
- Water Icon = Solid Red (pipe setup pending - this is normal)
- Both LEDs = Both Green after pipe config completes
Step 3: Activation & Configuration
Connect to the FM350 via Bluetooth using the WaterCompass Installer App to complete device activation and pipe configuration. This step links the device to the cloud and applies your site-specific settings.
Step 3-1: Open the Installer App and Connect via Bluetooth
Launch the WaterCompass Installer App on your mobile device. Select the FM350 from the list of available devices to establish a Bluetooth connection.
Step 3-2: Configure the Flow Monitor
In the Installer App, configure the flow monitor. Verify that the pipe material, diameter, and other settings, including location information, are correct. Update the pipe configuration on the device.
- Tap Install Device from the menu
- Select the Site
- Crate new monitoring point
- Fill in all details
- Add GPS and location information
- Save
Step 3-3: Disconnect Bluetooth
Once configuration is complete, disconnect Bluetooth from the FM350 by pressing the Bluetooth button on the device. The device will automatically initiate its LTE connection and begin downloading the pipe configuration.
Do NOT press Play after disconnecting Bluetooth. The FM350 auto-initiates LTE when BT disconnects. Pressing Play will interrupt the pipe configuration download.
Step 4: Verification & Wrap Up
Confirm that the installation is complete by verifying LED indicators, signal quality, and flow readings. Submit the WaterCompass Installation Report (WCIR) to finalize the process.
Step 4-1: Verify LED Status
After the pipe configuration download completes, verify that both LED indicators show the correct status.
Step 4-2: Re-connect to the device via Bluetooth
Launch the WaterCompass Installer App on your mobile device. Select the FM350 from the list of available devices to establish a Bluetooth connection.
Step 4-3: Run Installation Verification Check
Reconnect via Bluetooth to verify signal quality and flow readings through the Installer App. Confirm that the PSR (Pipe Signal Response) and Gain values pass, and that View Pulses shows GPM when water is flowing.
Installation Complete Checklist:
- Wireless icon green (LTE connected)
- Water icon green (pipe setup passed)
- PSR = Pass
- Gain = Pass
- View Pulses shows GPM with flow
- Submit final installation photos via the Installer App
