This article explains what the “Device Valve Decoder Open Circuit” message means, why it occurs, and how to troubleshoot issues with the solenoid, wiring, or connections that prevent the zone from running.

Common Causes
- Solenoid has failed
- Bad splice at the solenoid
- Broken zone wire
- No Solenoid is installed
What Happens Now?
- Irrigation will not occur on zones that have an Open Circuit message.
- Before troubleshooting the message.
- This ONLY applies to the solenoid side of the biCoder, doesn’t apply to the 2-wire path
Troubleshooting Tips
- Start at the zone that is getting this message (ex. biCoder serial number: E188171 = Zone 9)
- Replace solenoid or DBR/Y-6 splices
- If broken zone wire, use traditional wire repair tools to isolate the short.
- If you have un-used biCoder outputs that would normally go to a solenoid, unassign them.
- Controller will check output of wires for biCoders. Conventional wire systems, will check the terminals of a powered biCoder
- It will create and open circuit message.
- To avoid the messages, unassign the unused serial numbers by going to BaseManager → Device → Assign biCoders.
